Orton put his team ahead early in the second quarter, tossing a beautiful 26-yard touchdown to Sammy Watkins early in the second quarter. He saved his best for the end of the game, getting the ball back down six points with a little more than three minutes left in the fourth quarter and engineering an 80-yard drive capped by a two-yard touchdown to Watkins in the corner of the end zone with one second left on the clock.
Orton is 2-1 as the Bills' starter, and he's managed 890 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions during his three games. His next test comes on the road in Week 8 when the Bills square off with the Jets.
Orton completed 24 of 38 passes for 299 yards and one touchdown. He was able to tie the game at 7 in the second quarter with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Robert Woods. His second touchdown pass came with 5:58 left in the fourth quarter. It was an 8-yard touchdown to Chris Hogan, which cut the deficit to 30-22.
Orton, who also lost a fumble Sunday, has passed for 607 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in two games since taking over as the team's starting quarterback. The Bills are back in action Week 7 vs. Minnesota.
Orton's interception had shades of deposed starter EJ Manuel, throwing a dangerous pass to a covered receiver in the flat that was picked off and returned 41 yards for a touchdown, putting the Bills behind 14-0 early in the second quarter. He then led the team to 17 unanswered points, including a fourth-quarter touchdown on a two-yard pass to an uncovered receiver off play action. It was a successful debut in the starting lineup for Orton despite the ugly pick. The 3-2 Bills host the Patriots in Week 6.
Detroit's defense has done an excellent job against quarterbacks this season, allowing just 12.5 Fantasy points per game, the third-lowest mark in the league. Opposing passers have yet to register a multiple touchdown game against the Lions, with only Cam Newton notching better than 12 Fantasy points against them.
The Lions feature one of the league's best defensive lines, and have racked up 10 sacks through four games, good for fifth in the league. Fortunately, this should at least be one place where strength matches up against strength for the Bills, as they have allowed just six sacks in four games.
This won't be an easy way for Orton's time as the Bills' starter to begin, especially since the Lions also stop the run very well. He has some weapons around him, but Orton could struggle at first, and probably doesn't have much upside as a short-term Fantasy option.
After starting the season 0-2, Manuel and the Bills have dropped back-to-back games. Over that span, he compiled 463 passing yards with a 3-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He was sacked five times over that two-game stretch.
"It wasn't all EJ's fault. We just need more overall production from that position," Marrone said, via WGR Sportsradio 550.
