Jamaal Charles not mad at Derrick Johnson
by Larry Hartstein |

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles said he was surprised by the hard hit linebacker Derrick Johnson gave him in the Pro Bowl. But Charles isn't mad at his Chiefs' teammate, reports

"I didn't expect it, but he's out there doing his thing," said Charles, who got knocked out of Kansas City's Jan. 4 playoff loss with a concussion. "I can't get mad at him -- it's just about football, and you've just got to be ready."

Johnson lowered his shoulder and blasted Charles in his shoulder/head area, the report said. The game's defensive MVP, Johnson said he would never try to hurt a teammate and that he was merely trying to "compete a little bit."

Derrick Johnson delivers helmet-to-helmet hit on Jamaal Charles
by Larry Hartstein |

Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson showed no mercy on his teammate, running back Jamaal Charles, during a first-quarter running play at the Pro Bowl. Johnson delivered a helmet-to-helmet blow on Charles, drawing gasps from the crowd and shocking the announcers.

The hit was stunning, especially considering Charles missed most of the playoff loss at Indianapolis with a concussion. Charles kept playing after the hit but looked perturbed with his teammate.

Charles is a co-captain for Team Sanders, Johnson a member of Team Rice. According to NFL Network, Johnson was upset Charles did not pick him in the player draft. But in an on-field interview, Johnson merely said he was trying to prevent Charles from gaining a head of steam.
