2016 Rio Olympics golf: Updated odds have Henrik Stenson entering as favorite
Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler are not far behind the Swede
After winning The Open Championship and nearly doing the same at the PGA Championship two weeks later, Henrik Stenson enters the 2016 Rio Olympics as a heavy favorite, according to Bovada.
Stenson is one of just four OWGR top 10 players competing in the event and is the highest-ranked so this makes sense.
Let's look at some of the odds.
Favorite
- Henrik Stenson: 5-1
The Big Swede will win this tournament if he plays like he has at the last two majors. He was a combined 28 under. Next best was Phil Mickelson at 20 under. Then Tyrrell Hatton at 15 under. Dominance from Stenson.
Other Favorites
- Sergio Garcia: 7-1
- Justin Rose: 10-1
- Rickie Fowler: 14-1
- Bubba Watson: 16-1
- Martin Kaymer: 16-1
- Patrick Reed: 18-1
- Matt Kuchar: 18-1
I'm feeling Reed at 18-1 here. He's been playing quite well recently with top 15s in his last three events (including two major championships). Someone from this group winning would surprise nobody. In fact, I would be incredibly surprised if the winner wasn't one of the eight names listed thus far.
Fringe Favorites
- Danny Willett: 22-1
- Emiliano Grillo: 25-1
- Rafael Cabrera-Bello: 28-1
- Byeong Hun-An: 40-1
- Padraig Harrington: 40-1
- Thongchai Jaidee: 40-1
Love Cabrera-Bello at 28-1. That's a great number for somebody who has quietly been making a push to be on the European Ryder Cup team (and indeed will likely be on it).
Others
- Bernd Wiesberger: 50-1
- Danny Lee: 50-1
- David Lingmerth: 50-1
- Jhonattan Vegas: 50-1
- Soren Kjeldsen: 50-1
- Thomas Pieters: 50-1
- David Hearn: 66-1
- Joost Luiten: 66-1
- Graham DeLaet: 66-1
- Anirban Lahiri: 66-1
- Kiradech Aphibarnrat: 66-1
- Nicolas Colsaerts: 66-1
It's kind of a crapshoot from here. I like Aphibarnrat at 66-1, but I would also like to go a little deeper than this. Maybe Yuta Ikeada at 125-1 or Alex Cejka at 125-1. Those seem like better deals than David Hearn at 66-1.
