Olympic boxing: Robeisy Ramirez tops Shakur Stevenson for gold at bantamweight
Stevenson had his moments, but fell by split decision to one of Cuba's best
Shakur Stevenson left everything he had in the boxing ring on Saturday, but it just wasn't enough. Cuban Robiesy Ramirez earned his second straight gold medal in Olympic boxing by split decision. It was the first time since 2000 that an American man won silver. No American man has won gold since 2004 and a gold in the bantamweight division has not come back to the United States since 1988.
"I'm hurt. I had to make it clear. I like all my fights to be clear victories," Stevenson said emotionally after the fight. "I felt he got his victory. Much respect to him."
Stevenson completely broke down after the fight, "I don't like to lose."

Ramirez controlled much of the fight, staying inside Stevenson's guard and preventing him from land too many jabs. Ramirez earned gold in 2012 in the flyweight division.
According to CompuBox, Stevenson landed a greater percentage of shots (33) than Ramirez (27) but the Cuban landed one more punch (45-44). It will be interesting to see what the 19-year-old boxer does next.
He will likely get offers to go professional, but he also may want another shot at gold in 2020, given how close this matchup was.
