Reports: Orgeron retains DC Dave Aranda for LSU staff, attention turns to Lane Kiffin
Dave Aranda decided to stay on at LSU with a new deal that includes the associate head coach title
One of the reasons LSU felt comfortable investing in Ed Orgeron is his recruiting prowess. Just a few days into his tenure as full-time coach, Orgeron has landed a huge commitment from his top immediate target.
Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has reportedly agreed to a new three-year deal to stay on Orgeron's staff after one year at LSU, assuming the title of "associate head coach." The specific terms are not known and the contract has not been signed, according to ESPN and The Advocate, but the news confirms Orgeron's promise to LSU fans from his introductory press conference.
"We have some great coaches on our staff right now, led by Dave Aranda," Orgeron told reporters on Saturday. "He is the best coordinator in football, and we plan on him being with us. I spoke to him this morning. We're happy that Dave's an LSU Tiger, I promise you that."

Aranda is a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to the country's top assistant, after leading a talented and tenacious Tigers defense throughout the 2016 season. Now that Orgeron has locked up Aranda, he'll turn his attention to another blue-chip coaching prospect: Lane Kiffin.
According to The Advocate, Orgeron "blew away" the LSU administration in his meeting on Friday. He "brought a massive binder detailing long-term plans, which included the hiring of a proven and successful offensive coordinator." ESPN notes in the Aranda report that Orgeron is still "a couple weeks" away from naming an offensive coordinator, likely waiting for Kiffin to emerge from the midseason grind with Alabama to make an official offer.
Nick Saban said he hasn't heard anything from Kiffin on an offer as of yet on Sunday's conference call.
"I don't know anything about that," Saban said. "He hasn't come to me about it, and I'm sure he would."
Kiffin and Orgeron were assistants together on Pete Carroll's USC staff, then reunited at Tennessee when Kiffin was named the Vols' head coach. The two moved together from Tennessee to USC when Kiffin switched jobs, and Orgeron was later named the interim coach for the Trojans in 2013 following Kiffin's early season dismissal.
