Northwestern State tops Auburn 111-92

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Jalan West scored a career-high 30 points to lead Northwestern State to a 111-92 comeback victory over Auburn on Friday night.

Gary Stewart added 23 for Northwestern State (2-0) on 5-of-8 3-pointers. The Demons were 14-of-27 from deep in the victory after going 0-for-17 on 3-pointers in their season-opening win against Division III opponent LeTourneau.

Northwestern State, which had five players in double figures, overcame a nine-point halftime deficit by shooting 68 percent from the field in the second half. The Demons went on an 18-2 run late in the game to seal the victory against the host Tigers.

Chris Denson scored a career-high 29 points in the loss for Auburn (1-1), with 20 coming in the first half. KT Harrell added 21 for the Tigers despite shooting only 2-for-11 from 3-point range.

Friday night's road victory at Auburn Arena was Northwestern State's first win against an SEC team since an overtime win against Mississippi State on Nov. 26, 2005.

Northwestern State freshman Zikiteran Woodley scored 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Brison White added 16 points for the Demons, and DeQuan Hicks scored 14.

One of the nation's top teams in offensive points per game last season, Northwestern State got out to a slow start Friday night by shooting just 34 percent in the first half.

After Auburn extended its lead to 13 points early in the second half, Northwestern State rallied to tie the game at 73 with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Demons hit 9 of their last 10 shots and led by 20 at one point. Auburn attempted 20 3-pointers in the second half, but only netted six.

While Auburn outrebounded Northwestern State 43-42, the Tigers shot just 56 percent from the free throw line. Northwestern State hit 25-of-29 free throws and made 14 straight as a team to end the game.

Northwestern State's 19-point victory snapped an eight-game losing streak against SEC competition. The defending Southland Tournament champions have a quick turnaround as they face their consecutive SEC opponent, LSU, on Saturday.
