Alabama's BCS championship trophy accidentally shattered

By Chip Patterson | College Football Writer
The crystal orb from Alabama's BCS National Championship in January shattered on Saturday, after it fell from a podium following the Tide's annual A-Day scrimmage. Reports indicate the Tide will likely receive another.

ESPN.com's Alex Scarborough reported the incident, and shared the remaining evidence on his Twitter account.

The Coaches' Trophy from this season's BCS national title was accidentally knocked off its podium and shattered by a current player's father whose foot got caught on a rug that sits beneath the trophy display. The Waterford Crystal trophy was on display in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility halls, home to coach Nick Saban's office and other athletic personnel.

Scarborough also reported the trophy is handmade in Ireland, and valued at $30,000. A university spokesperson confirmed that efforts are being made to replace the trophy. I would suggest keeping the crystal ball in the hands of a Trent Richardson statue to ensure it never gets dropped again, but I don't have hiring-firing power like that in Tuscaloosa.
