Wilkerson allowed two runs on four hits while striking out eight and walking none in seven innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.
We can't help but wonder if the 27-year-old, former independent-league hurler will get a shot to start in Boston -- particularly after the Red Sox demoted Eduardo Rodriguez following his woeful start Monday. Wilkerson is 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA in six starts during his second stint with the PawSox, striking out at least seven batters in five of those starts. Wilkerson has impeccable command but doesn't have overpowering stuff and lacks an above-average offering in his four-pitch mix. His pedigree suggests he won't be able to get major leaguers out consistently, but the Red Sox have few options at this time.
