Fantasy Basketball Start and Sit: Week 5 Top 150 rankings
The wide-variance schedule will dictate your usage of Jazz and Bulls players in NBA Week 5, Chris Towers says.
Editor's Note: Every week, we will release the Top 150 players based on their projections for that scoring period. Use this list to compare players and help make those really tough decisions.
More than any other Fantasy sport, the schedule can dictate your success or failure in basketball. With the exception or each team's single bye week, you know everyone is going to play once per week in the NFL. In MLB, a week without at least six games is rare.
However, the schedule really matters in NBA Fantasy. Because there are so many days off, and they're distributed somewhat randomly throughout the season, you'll end up with situations like an upcoming one for the Warriors. They play the following number of games each week, beginning in Week 7: 5, 3, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4. That's tough for Fantasy players to navigate.
The Jazz and Bulls have had pretty good schedules so far, however. You've been able to just set your lineup and forget about it if you have heavy exposure to either team, because they had played four games in each week from Week 2 through 4. That's going to change in Week 5 (Nov. 21-27), because both teams have just two games.
There are some pretty big names on these two teams, so Fantasy players are going to have some tough decisions to make. Let's try to figure out who actually is worth starting this week on these teams:
Jimmy Butler's multi-position eligibility and all-around excellence just allows him to sneak into the starting range. He is ranked the 113th player in H2H projections this week, thanks to a 36.2 per game projection, and it's fair to wonder if that's not underselling him. Butler is averaging 37.9 Fantasy points per game, and chips in enough across the board -- 1.5 3-pointers per game, 89.1 percent at the free-throw line -- to be worth starting in Rotisserie scoring too.
Gordon Hayward l0oks a lot riskier than Butler, even if their production might end up being pretty similar. Hayward can provide solid rebounding and assist totals to buttress his production, but he is shooting just 39.4 percent from the field and 22.7 percent on 3-pointers, so he could be one bad game from ruining your week. The looming potential of George Hill's return from a thumb injury similarly makes Hayward risky, but he can still be in your lineup if you don't have a better option at forward.
Rudy Gobert is a solid enough option in H2H scoring formats, especially thanks to his strong rebounding, but he is still a No. 2 center even when the schedule favors him. You just aren't getting the kind of volume scoring you need from him in Fantasy point formats to be much more than that. This definitely puts him out of the picture in H2H formats, however he can still be startable in Roto, thanks to his strong percentages, and his defensive numbers. He is still a low-end option, to be sure, but if your option is Gobert with two games or Cody Zeller with four, Gobert probably gives you more in blocks and rebounds to make up for it.
