Hero World Challenge tee times -- Thursday: When does Tiger Woods tee off today?
An American legend plays with a former Ryder Cup vice captain in the Bahamas
One of the all-time greats will play with a Ryder Cup vice captain this week at the Hero World Challenge when Patrick Reed tees it up with Tiger Woods at 12 p.m. ET on Thursday in the first round.
Woods was of course a vice captain at the Ryder Cup for the United States and the de facto of the Reed-Jordan Spieth mini team. Reed even told Woods he was not going to sit out, even though that was what everyone on the U.S. side was supposed to do.
"Well, he told me and Tiger, 'How could you sit out your best player?'" captain Davis Love III told ESPN recently. "Why would you sit him out?' We love you, Patrick, but everybody is going to sit out. I get it. I was that guy in 1993."
Love (and Tiger) listened, though, and Reed went 3-1-1 on the week and was the emotional spark plug Love and Co. desperately needed.
"I know he has that in him," said Spieth of his partner Reed. "We've all seen it before. He's Captain America for us. He wanted to play five matches at the beginning of the week. Tiger told him he might be sitting one and he said, 'You are not sitting me on any matches.' We got off to the start in the mornings that we needed to secure a spot in the afternoon."
Now Reed will get his hero as a playing partner at the Hero World Challenge for at least a day. Reed grew up wanting to be Woods. It's why he wears red and black on Sundays.
"The best player ever to live when I was growing up wore black pants, a red shirt," Reed once said. "I was growing up watching him, I always thought, you know, it would be cool to wear black and red come down Sunday."
