LOOK: Former Trump WGC golf event has its new home in Mexico
This World Golf Championship event -- formerly the Cadillac Championship -- will be played next year in Mexico, and its course looks terrific
There were rumors about where the second WGC event of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season would end up after it moved away from Trump National Doral earlier this year. We knew the locale would be Mexico, and now we have an official golf course. The Club de Golf Chapultepec will play host to the 2017 WGC-Mexico Championship from March 2-5, 2017.
"We're excited to be able to bring such a global tournament to Club de Golf Chapultepec," club chairman Rodrigo Lebois told the PGA Tour. "There will be plenty of tough holes that will keep the leaderboard interesting, and we're excited to be able to offer memorable viewing experiences for the fans and our members while they're here during tournament week. Being involved with this event is more than an honor, and we're looking forward to supporting Grupo Salinas' mission of growing the game of golf in Mexico."
Grupo Salinas has signed a seven-year contract, according to the PGA Tour.
Here's a look at what the course will play like next March.
It has more trees than I thought it would for some reason and actually looks a little like some of the California courses that are currently played on the PGA Tour. It's a WGC event so the field strength should be no problem. If that video is any indication, the course won't be either.
