Three of the biggest favorites for the British Open in a month are just two weeks removed from missing the cut at the last major. Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy are all heavyweights when it comes to wagering on the third major at Royal Birkdale. None of them played the weekend at the U.S. Open at Erin Hills.

They all have a good history at this event, though. McIlroy has won it, Johnson has nearly won it multiple times and Day has never missed the cut. Let's take a look at where they sit on the odds sheet with just three tournaments between now and the tournament.

The favorites

  • Dustin Johnson: 8-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 10-1
  • Jordan Spieth: 11-1

If I'm betting here, I'd go with Spieth -- mostly because he has the most favorable odds for bettors but also because he's playing the best of the three right now. He's not as terrifying at his best as McIlroy and Johnson, but he'll be able to push and pull his way around Birkdale as well as anyone.

Johnson has finished in the top 15 in five of the last seven years.

The other favorites

  • Jason Day: 16-1
  • Sergio Garcia: 16-1
  • Rickie Fowler: 18-1
  • Henrik Stenson: 20-1
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 20-1
  • Justin Rose: 20-1

Fowler and Garcia are really tasty at those numbers. I don't really love anybody else.

The fringe favorites

  • Jon Rahm: 28-1
  • Brooks Koepka: 28-1
  • Adam Scott: 30-1
  • Alex Noren: 33-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 33-1
  • Justin Thomas: 35-1
  • Phil Mickelson: 35-1
  • Thomas Pieters: 35-1
  • Paul Casey: 35-1

I think I might love Fleetwood at 33-1 a little bit too much here. Pieters is fun as well, but I love the way Fleetwood is playing.

The sleepers

  • Branden Grace: 40-1
  • Lee Westwood: 50-1
  • Louis Oosthuizen: 50-1
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 50-1
  • Patrick Reed: 50-1

Grace, Westwood, Oosthuizen and Hatton are all super fun sleepers, especially at those numbers above. All except Grace have contended for this tournament in the last few years, and all probably will again. It would be so cool to see Westwood win it in England.
