Sources tell Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News that the Rangers and the City of Arlington, Texas, will soon announce plans for a new retractable roof stadium.

The Rangers have played in what's now known as Globe Life Park since just 1994, so it's going to wind up having not much of a lifespan as major-league ballparks go. As Grant notes, the Rangers are under lease at Globe Life until through the 2023 season. The new ballpark, however, is expected to become a reality before that lease expires.

Grant's story has more, including a rundown of the collaborative history between team and city on projects such as this one.

State-of-the-art retractable-roof ballparks are creeping toward $1 billion in costs, so the final price tag on the Rangers' new home could be a jarring one. A staple in MLB since early in Bud Selig's tenure has been heavy public financing -- i.e., tax dollars -- for ballpark projects. Don't be surprised if that's yet again the case.

Globe Life, of course, was part of that early generation of retro ballparks -- a trend of course begun by Camden Yards. So how long until teams like the White Sox, Orioles, and Indians start clamoring for new digs? Ballparks come in waves, and the thing about waves is they don't stop rolling in.
