WATCH: Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs was extremely polite to the umpire in Game 4
An apology will go a long way with an umpire, it seems
So here's a cool/interesting moment from the Cubs' win over the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS. In the fifth inning, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo assumed ball four while at the plate and began making his way to first base when in fact the pitch in question was called a strike by plate ump Angel Hernandez. Umps tend not to like it very much when a hitter assumes a call in such a manner, so that little within-the-game dynamic brought us this exchange when Rizzo came up again in the seventh ...
After Rizzo offered up his apologies, Hernandez responded thus:
"Your fault for what brother? Come on, you're good, bro. You're awesome with us. No, no worries. You're competing. I understand. Don't worry. You know what's best of it? You come back and tell me that. That's how good of a guy you are."
After the game, Rizzo explained the moment ...
To be sure, it never hurts to curry favor with the guy who calls balls and strikes and thus runs the engine of the game, but let's not be cynical with the weekend so near at hand. Good job, Rizzo.
