Eric O'Flaherty endures another rough outing
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Athletics relief pitcher Eric O'Flaherty had another rough outing Sunday afternoon against the Mariners. He permitted one run on two hits and no walks while striking out one over one inning of relief in a 4-2 defeat. He has allowed a run in three of his last four outings. He owns a 2.45 ERA over 18 1/3 innings of work this season.

Eric O'Flaherty dealing with back issue
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Athletics relief pitcher Eric O'Flaherty was unavailable for this weekend's series against the Astros because of lower back tightness, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which explains why Ryan Cook got the save opportunity Sunday. O'Flaherty had been filling in for the injured Sean Doolittle.

O'Flaherty, who hurt himself on Thursday's off day, likely won't pitch Monday at the White Sox either, though he will throw a bullpen session beforehand.

Eric O'Flaherty notched first save
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Athletics reliever Eric O'Flaherty notched his first save Wednesday against the Astros.

O'Flaherty entered with a two-run lead, and ran into some trouble. Robbie Grossman led off the inning, but was erased on a double play. It was a good thing for O'Flaherty too, as the next batter hit a solo home run. With the lead down to one, O'Flaherty got a lineout to end the game.

Is Eric O'Flaherty your top choice for saves?
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

If you play in a league where everyone who gets saves is already owned, then by golly, pick up Eric O'Flaherty already. He's rumored to be the Athletics' first choice to replace Sean Doolittle, who could miss 3-6 weeks with a strained intercostal, and he should do fine in the role. Granted, he's made only 14 appearances since returning from Tommy John surgery, but he's been as effective in those 14 appearances as he was the previous three years in Atlanta, when he compiled a 1.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.

But if you're looking to replace Doolittle in a league where everyone who gets saves isn't already owned, I'm not sure O'Flaherty should be your first choice. He's only recently back from surgery, is completely unproven in the role and is closing for a team that hasn't generated as many save opportunities as its win-loss record would lead you to believe.

Of course, I think that last point is kind of a fluke, and I don't normally base decisions on flukes, but for someone like Joaquin Benoit, who's owned in only 46 percent of leagues, whether or not it's a fluke won't even enter your mind. He did fine in the role with the Tigers last year, and his numbers are just as good as O'Flaherty's, if not better. I also like Hector Rondon's chances for saves with the way the Cubs have improved their pitching staff over the last few weeks. He's gone from 14 saves to 21 in the last 13 days.

Either Benoit or Rondon would be a better (not to mention more permanent) choice for saves than O'Flaherty down the stretch, and both are widely available in Fantasy.

Eric O'Flaherty first choice to close for A's
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

With Sean Doolittle set to go on the disabled list, Eric O'Flaherty will be the first choice to close games for the Athletics, according to the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday. The move was made to keep Luke Gregerson and Ryan Cook in their set-up roles, per the paper.

O'Flaherty owns a 1.35 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP over 13 1/3 innings of relief this season.
