Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan will not need surgery for his injured back, the Miami Herald reports. Coghlan was instructed to rest his back after visiting a spine specialist Sunday, and told manager Mike Redmond he is feeling much better.

Coghlan, who was placed on the disabled list June 9, has no timetable for his return.

Coghlan hasn't played since June 8 and was placed on the 15-day disabled list with back trouble. An MRI revealed a more serious injury, and Coghlan will likely be out much longer than 15 days. Coghlan will see Dr. Drew Dossett, who has treated other athletes who have suffered back issues. 

Coghlan is hitting .277/.326/.415 in 130 at-bats.

"It's hard to say until we really figure out what he's got going," Redmond said. "He might have to go off and do some more tests to exactly figure out what he's got going back there."

Coghlan was initially dealing with pain in his calf and leg, before an MRI revealed the source of the injury to be his lower back. Coghlan's injury comes at a bad time, as he was in the midst of one of his best stretches since his rookie of the year season. Coghlan was hitting .343 with nine RBI since moving into the everyday lineup May 18.

"I feel terrible for him, because he was patient," Redmond said. "He didn't get a ton of chances early and made the most of his playing time. He's red hot. He was probably our best offensive player."
