Red Sox closer Koji Uehara likely to begin year on disabled list
by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara is likely to begin the season on the disabled list, reports ESPN. After throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday, Uehara is still having issues with his left hamstring. He hasn't taken the mound since March 14th.

Manager John Farrell said, “I don’t think there’s anything to suggest that come next Monday, he’s in our bullpen.”

“I think I’m going to start on the DL just because I haven’t had the games in,” Uehara said through interpreter C.J. Matsumoto. “If that is the case, if I start on the DL, it will certainly be a disappointment.”

Uehara knows that this is a process, and he is unsure of when he'll return to the mound.

“I don’t know when I’ll be back,” he said. “It’s a day-to-day process. I have to do what I have to do to get ready.”

Farrell was asked about how the bullpen will shape up heading into the beginning of the season.

“I don’t have seven names to give you right now,” he said. “We’ve still got some things to determine. How we’re going to determine the rotation, whether we go with an additional left-hander or right-hander, what the ramifications of Koji coming out of the mix for the short run. Does that likely move Edward [Mujica] back into the closing role?

“I do know this: We’re at a point in camp when guys are throwing the ball as expected, and that includes Robbie Ross. That’s Matt Barnes. Brandon Workman’s last time out was encouraging, so as we get to the final week of camp here, the guys we felt would be in contention for spots are moving in the right direction.”

Uehara, 40, has pitched in three games this spring, posting an ERA of 6.00, six hits given up with three strikeouts.

Red Sox's Koji Uehara to throw a bullpen, still unlikely for Opening Day
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara (hamstring) will toss a bullpen session on Monday but manager John Farrell doesn't expect him to ready by Opening Day, according to the Boston Globe

Uehara had felt discomfort in his hamstring during a bullpen session Saturday, possibly reaggravating an injury he sustained while running on March 17.

Uehara has allowed two earned runs on seven hits in three innings of work this spring.

Edward Mujica to start season as Red Sox closer
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Red Sox pitcher Edward Mujica will start the season in the closer role, manager John Farrell confirmed on Sunday.

With Koji Uehara unlikely to be ready to start the year, Farrell said Mujica would get first shot at closing.

"There’s been times where he’s thrown a ball down and away to right-handers with good stuff," Farrell said, per WEEI. "Right now, he would be the guy that we turn to in closing situations. I will also say that we would look to matchup in the ninth inning as well. We’ll look to exploit the best matchup, and that could be any one of three or four guys down there to finish a game."

Farrell: Red Sox RP Uehara 'not likely' to make Opening Day roster
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday that closer Koji Uehara (hamstring) is "not likely" to be on the team's Opening Day roster, the Providence Journal reports.

Uehara felt discomfort in his hamstring during his bullpen session Saturday while throwing for the first time in two weeks, and while Farrell wasn't ready to rule out Uehara for Opening Day Saturday, the closer appears headed for a trip to the disabled list in order to recover fully from the injury.

Hamstring bothers Koji Uehara in Red Sox bullpen session
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Koji Uehara tested his ailing right hamstring with a bullpen session  for the Red Sox on Saturday. Unfortunately, it didn't pass.

Uehara did his first throwing in two weeks, and he reported lingering discomfort, according to MLB.com's Ian Browne.

There's still the possibility he'll be ready by opening day. He'll try again on Monday, and then be able to get two game appearances in.

"Realizing that we're 10 days or nine days from opening, even if Koji were to get in a couple of games, I think, we'd still remain open-minded to beginning [with him]," manager John Farrell said. "We're talking about a one-inning reliever, a veteran guy, who has been able to keep his arm in shape, at least through long toss and at least some flatground. This is still day to day at this point."
