Padres catcher Derek Norris turning the corner offensively
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Padres catcher Derek Norris is starting to get his timing down at the plate after opening the spring mired in a 2-for-29 slump. He has gone 3 for 5 with one home run and two RBI in his last two spring games, to raise his average from .069 to .147.

“I was starting too late, instead of starting early and being easy with it,” Norris said of his leg kick, per U-T San Diego. “I was being late and quick with it, so it caused a lot of head movement, not recognizing pitches well enough. So I’m just trying to slow the game down and just let my natural ability take place.

“(I've been) just a little jumpy. When you’re a little bit jumpy, it just means you’re late. For me, my leg kick, getting it up early, getting it down, so when your lead foot hits, that’s when you can start to fire and hit. Whenever it’s late, then you have to rush and it all gets out of whack. So just get it up early, nice and easy, and it’s been a lot better the last few days.”

Norris added learning a new pitching staff might have also contributed to his slow start.

“My priority’s definitely getting to know these guys on the mound," he said. "That’s No. 1. Obviously, everybody would love to go 4 for 4 every day. In my case, controlling a pitching staff and getting to know these guys is priority No. 1, and I definitely put that ahead of everything else, ahead of hitting, ahead of weightlifting.”

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

The Athletics have agreed to trade catcher Derek Norris to the Padres, according to the New York Daily News.

After dealing Yasmani Grandal to Los Angeles in the Matt Kemp deal, the Padres were in need of a new backstop. It didn't take long for them to replace Grandal, as the team acquired Norris shortly after the Kemp deal went through.

The 25-year-old Norris is coming off a season in which he hit .270/.361/.403 over 385 at-bats. Norris is under team control through the 2018 season.

The Athletics are expected to receive pitchers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez in the deal, according to Yahoo! The 24-year-old Alvarez posted a 1.25 ERA over 43 1/3 innings at Double-A last year.

Hahn, 25, posted a 3.07 ERA over 73 1/3 innings in the majors last year. He was excellent in Double-A, posting a 1.91 ERA in 42 1/3 innings before being called up.
