Despite a down year in 2013, first baseman/outfielder
"I’m not given anything," Moore said Saturday at FanFest, per MLB.com. "I definitely have to earn what I’m gonna get. I’m just looking forward to it, looking forward to competing."
While Moore's numbers declined in '13 as he took on more of a bench role, he did perform well down the stretch once he returned from the minors. Moore hit .344 with a .375 on-base percentage and .834 OPS in his last 21 games following his recall.
He explained what might have contributed to his poor start last season.
"I think last year maybe I was a little too lackadaisical in spring, and that’s what I want to kind of correct this year because I know I don’t have an everyday job, obviously," Moore said. "I have to be ready to come in and hit when I have a chance, and when I have that chance, I have to take the best advantage of it."
Moore is hitting .318 with a .979 OPS in 173 at-bats at Triple-A this season, but hit just .151 in the majors prior to a demotion earlier in the season.
"The sooner the better," the source added.
If Moore returns to Washington, he could see more playing time than before. Moore could start in left field against left-handed pitchers, moving Bryce Harper to center field on those nights.
Moore has been a changed hitter since his demotion to Triple-A in early July. He hit .394 with four home runs, five doubles and 18 RBI in 17 July games following his demotion, and he's batting .292 with two home runs, three doubles and nine RBI in six August games.
Moore, who had a two-homer, six-RBI outing Monday, said his timing has been better since he started working with Syracuse hitting coach Troy Gingrich. Moore struggled with his bench role for Washington, batting .151 in 42 games.
"For me it was Troy helping me out a lot and in that I need to start earlier," Moore said, per The Washington Post. "It slowed the ball down, slowed everything down and now it feels like I’m back to normal just hitting the ball like I can. It wasn’t anything with my swing, wasn’t anything to do with that. It was just tough coming off the bench and not being able to find that because you have only sporadic times to play."
