The club cut down from 58 to 46 players Thursday. Both Ranaudo and Cecchini are considered prospects within the system, but need more time to develop in the minors before they make their major-league debuts.
Ranaudo wasn't surprised by pitching well but did express some surprise that the opposition didn't take advantage of a few of his mistake pitches.
"I don’t really want to say I was surprised, but maybe a little surprised because some of them were up in the zone, even some early in the count. Obviously I’ve got to do a better job of bringing the ball down, but I wouldn’t say I was surprised," Ranaudo told MLB.com. "That’s what I’m going for every time I go out there — either swing and misses or weak contact or getting outs. I don’t like to use the word surprised, but I guess maybe in that context, some of them were up in the zone, but it felt good to get those swing-and-misses, for sure."
Ranaudo wasn't named one of the top 100 prospects in the league in either of the preseason lists from Baseball America or MLB.com, but he certainly has the potential to turn heads this spring after going 11-5 with a 2.96 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 127:47 K:BB ratio in 140 innings between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last season.
Cecchini hit .322/.443/.471 with seven home runs, 61 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 454 at-bats between high Class A Salem and Double-A Portland in 2013. Brentz his .264/.312/.475 with 17 home runs and 56 RBI in 326 at-bats with Triple-A Pawtucket. Ranaudo went 11-5 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 127:47 K:BB ratio in 140 innings between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.
Ranaudo went just three innings, giving up five runs. He surrendered eight hits, and walked two. Ranaudo struck out just one batter. Even after the rough start, Ranaudo still has a solid 3.42 ERA in Triple-A.
Ranaudo, 23, was the 14th-ranked prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America heading into the season. He excelled at Double-A Portland, where he posted a 2.95 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings. He is considered a legitimate option for a Red Sox rotation spot at some point in 2014.
