| Mendoza an early favorite for rotation: According to MLB.com, Royals RHP Luis Mendoza is a prominent candidate to make the team's starting rotation in 2012 after going 12-5 with a 2.18 ERA at Triple-A Omaha in 2011. "When you throw up an ERA like he did in the PCL, that's outstanding," said Omaha manager Mike Jirschele. "You don't see that happening in the PCL -- half those ballparks you can spit over the wall." Mendoza, who will be 28 by opening day, allowed two earned runs in 14 2/3 innings in two late-season starts for the Royals in 2011 -- a stark contrast from the 8.43 ERA he posted in his previous 36 major-league appearances. "You know what the difference is? He pitches out there now," Royals manager Ned Yost said. (Updated 10/18/2011) |

| Mendoza credits his turnaround to Omaha pitching coach Doug Henry. "I just pitched my way and didn't see any results, so I told Doug, 'Hey, teach me how to pitch like it was the first time I ever pitched, change everything. There's something I don't see or something that the hitters do see,'" Mendoza said. "Because I was healthy, I didn't have a lot of arm trouble. I was frustrated because I thought I was doing everything I could." Among other adjustments, Henry raised Mendoza's arm angle, creating more sink in his sinker. "That's been a good pitch for me," Mendoza said. Though Mendoza doesn't profile as a terrific Fantasy given his lack of strikeout ability, he could be a surprise contributor in AL-only leagues if he wins a rotation spot.
