Mariners' Seth Smith ready to hit 'wherever they put me'
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Mariners outfielder Seth Smith went 2 for 3 Tuesday with a home run and two RBI against the Padres. Smith, who has been discussed as an option at second in the batting order, has no preference on where he's lined up, according to MLB.com.

"I'll hit wherever they put me," said Smith. "I'll try to give a professional at-bat and see what happens."

Manager Lloyd McClendon likes the versatility Smith can bring to the lineup.

"It's important for the guys at the front of our order to be productive," said McClendon. "And it's important for the guys at the back end to be productive as well. We know the guys in the middle are going to produce. They've got good track records. But it's hard to do it if you don't have anybody on."

Mariners' McClendon a big fan of batting Seth Smith second
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon explained Thursday why he considers Seth Smith an ideal option to bat second in the lineup, per The Seattle Times.

“Doubles," McClendon said. “He has a propensity to hit a lot of doubles and grind out at-bats. A high on-base percentage. Hits right-handers well.

“We had a lot of problems with our No. 1, two and four spots last year. That (getting Smith) helped solve one of those problems."

Smith, who is a left-handed hitter, is expected to see most of his starts against right-handed pitchers. Smith has a career .277/.358/.481/.839 slash line against righties.

“I’ve hit (second) a lot,’’ Smith said. “But really, it doesn’t matter. Wherever they want to put me I’m going to try to give a professional at-bat and do the things that I can do offensively. Wherever they think that fits in the lineup is where I’ll hit.’’

Mariners DH Nelson Cruz to see time in right field 'on occasion'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz will see time in right field "on occasion" in order to let the team stream players through the designated-hiter slot, MLB.com reports.

"He’ll play out there in the season on occasion, because it’s nice to be able to rotate him out of that DH spot and give somebody else a day off and get him back on his feet," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "How much he’ll play in the spring, I’m not sure. But it would be safe to say he’ll play his share of games during the season in right field."

Cruz will primarly serve as a designated hitter by the Mariners but has played 744 games in right field in his career and 833 games in the outfield overall. While he's not on defense, the team is expected to use Seth Smith against most righties and Justin Ruggiano against most southpaws.

Mariners planning on batting Smith, Ruggiano in second spot in lineup
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said he is tentatively planning to bat the right-field tandem of Seth Smith and Justin Ruggiano second in the lineup, per The New Tribune.

The Mariners ranked last in the majors last season in on-base percentage (.260) from their No. 2 hitters. No other team was lower than .279.

Smith had a .367 OBP last season for San Diego, while Ruggiano had a .337 OBP in 81 games for the Cubs.

Mariners trade Brandon Maurer to Padres for Seth Smith
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

The Mariners agreed to trade pitcher Brandon Maurer to the Padres in exchange for outfielder Seth Smith.

In 2014, the right-handed Maurer went 1-4 with a 4.65 ERA and fills the Padres’ need for bullpen help. The left-handed-hitting Smith hit .266 with 12 homeruns and 48 RBI in 136 games.
