Brewers dispatch RP Jonathan Broxton to Cardinals
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Veteran reliever Jonathan Broxton has been traded from the Brewers to the Cardinals, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman has confirmed. The Brewers are receiving minor-league outfielder Malik Collymore in the deal.

The 31-year-old Broxton has been pitching well lately with seven consecutive scoreless appearances. But his ERA on the season is 5.89. He has allowed 41 hits in 36 2/3 innings.

Brewers RP Jonathan Broxton loses hold of setup role
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The struggles of Brewers setup man Jonathan Broxton means he is no longer their setup man.

In fact, nobody is at the moment.

Craig Counsell has declared that he will mix-and-match in such situations going forward unless someone emerges.

Broxton has allowed 15 runs in his last 18 1/3 innings. His latest mistake landed over the fence Friday night, courtesy of Diamondbacks shorstop Nick Ahmed and breaking a 4-4 deadlock. Counsell said after the game that Broxton is finding it difficult to miss bats.

"I feel like there's a little bit of a lack of a put-away [pitch] for him," he told MLB.com. "I think we start thinking about [removing Broxton from the setup role] because it's a big spot and we need outs in those spots. We need to give ourselves a chance in those spots. Those are big leverage innings he's pitching and we have to get outs in those innings."

Asked who will take over for Broxton, he said it would not be one guy.

Jonathan Broxton gets vote of confidence from Brewers' Craig Counsell
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Jonathan Broxton has struggled this year. He's given up runs in his last three outings and has an ERA of 7.82.

Despite that, manager Craig Counsell isn't concerned about leaving Broxton as his set-up man.

"He's just in a little slump," Counsell said per MLB.com. "He'll get out of it and he'll be the guy we're used to seeing. Just a little downturn that everyone is going to go through. He'll work hard to fix it and be right back to where he needs to be."

Brewers' Jonathan Broxton doesn't care about his role
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Brewers reliever Jonathan Broxton doesn't care about his role, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

Broxton enters the season as the favorite to close, but manager Ron Roenicke said he wouldn't announce his closer for a few more weeks. That doesn't really matter to Broxton, though. "I don't care where I pitch. Seventh, eighth, ninth — I don't care," he said. "They're all important outs."

The Brewers are reportedly talking to Francisco Rodriguez, but Broxton said he wouldn't mind if the team added another reliever. "I ain't going to sweat it if they go add somebody, and if they don't I'm not going to sweat," Broxton said. "I'm going to go out there and give it everything I have, every day."

Broxton posted a 2.30 ERA over 58 2/3 innings last year.

Brewers won't name closer until midway through camp
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

While Jonathan Broxton is ideally the most likely candidate for the role, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke told reporters Saturday that he won't name a closer until midway through spring training, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

General manager Doug Melvin wouldn't discuss about the possibility of trading for embattled reliever Jonathan Broxton. Melvin wouldn't reveal if Milwaukee will make a push for free agent Francisco Rodriguez.

Broxton was traded from Cincinnati to Milwaukee in August. He posted a 2.30 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 49:19 K:BB ratio over 58 2/3 innings between the Reds and Brewers in 2014. He will earn $9 million this season, and his deal includes a $9 million club option or $1 million buyout for 2016.
