A's maintain status quo with closer situation
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Athletics manager Bob Melvin re-iterated that his closer situation remains "status quo," meaning he'll continue his closer-by-committee approach, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports.

Jim Johnson started the season as the closer, but lost the job on April 10. Since losing his role as the ninth inning man, he has since allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out five over five scoreless frames.

Since Johnson lost his role, Luke Gregerson is 2 for 3 in save chances with a 1.93 ERA over 4 2/3 innings pitched. Sean Doolittle is 1 for 2 in save opportunities, and has allowed two runs over 3 1/3 innings since April 10.

Jim Johnson tosses two scoreless for extra-innings win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Athletics' reliever Jim Johnson tossed his third scoreless outing in a row, as he went two innings to pick up the win in a 10-9 victory over the Angels.

Johnson pitched scoreless 10th and 11th innings for the win, allowing one walk and one hit as he went. He struck out one batter and picked up five groundball outs en route to his second straight win.

Johnson lost the closer's role after giving up seven runs in his first five appearances. He has a 7.56 ERA in 8 1/3 innings.

Don't stray too far from Jim Johnson
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Be honest: When a reliever stops closing games, you put him out of your mind in Fantasy. The thought process goes something like, "He blew it. Who's next? Gimme!"

But Jim Johnson's removal from the role may only be temporary. In two appearances since then, he's thrown three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. And they've come in meaningful situations. He pitched the eighth inning of a tie game Monday before Luke Gregerson picked up the save in the ninth.

The Athletics acquired Johnson to be their closer. They're paying him $10 million, going against their usual budget-conscious approach, to be their closer. Regardless of how Gregerson and Sean Doolittle perform, when Johnson regains the Athletics' trust, which he's well on his way to doing, he's the most logical choice to claim the job outright.

When's the last time you saw a closer committee actually last? Sooner or later, someone has to distinguish himself, and if Gregerson and Doolittle keep going back and forth, it leaves the door open for Johnson to reclaim the role he was intended to have all along.

I'm scooping him up in leagues where others dropped him, provided saves are scarce on waivers.

Jim Johnson earns win with scoreless inning Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Athletics pitcher Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win in his team's 3-2 victory over the Angels Monday.

Johnson (1-2) struggled massively throughout the first two weeks of the season, leading to manager Bob Melvin removing him from the closing role. Monday's win was a step in the right direction, as he gave up one hit but was able to work a scoreless inning while only throwing nine pitches. He owns a 9.95 ERA and 8:6 K:BB ratio in 6 1/3 innings.

Could Jim Johnson regain closer's role?
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Athletics reliever Jim Johnson was very good in his first appearance since being removed from the closer's role last week, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out four Friday at Seattle.

However, A's manager Bob Melvin isn't ready to make any decisions about Johnson potentially regaining the closer's role. As of now, Melvin said he's moving forward with Luke Gregerson and Sean Doolittle as co-closers.

"Nothing is set in stone," Melvin said during an interview Monday with MLB Network Radio. "We feel comfortable where we are right now. We feel like we have two good options."
