Paul Millsap agrees to 3-year, $59 million deal with Hawks
Atlanta will keep free agent forward Paul Millsap.
The Atlanta Hawks have reached an agreement on a three-year deal with free agent forward Paul Millsap, as first reported by RealGM's Shams Charania and confirmed by CBSSports.com's Ken Berger. It is worth $59 million and Millsap will have a team option on the third year.
Millsap decided to return to the team that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals despite a four-year, $80 million maximum contract offer from the Orlando Magic. The Magic met with him as soon as free agency began, and Atlanta had to watch DeMarre Carroll leave for the Toronto Raptors in order to have the cap space to sign Millsap. The Hawks also traded for Tiago Splitter on Wednesday, so they'll have a fearsome frontcourt rotation of Millsap, Al Horford and Splitter.
The contract is fair for both sides. The 30-year-old Millsap got the big-money deal he had in mind when he signed for two years and $19 million in 2013, and he has the option of opting out in a couple of years to get a raise if he feels like he can. For Atlanta, it would have been a catastrophe to lose him. He's one of their four All-Stars, and perhaps the most important one on the offensive end because of the matchup problems he pressents at power forward.
