Report: Roy Hibbert agrees to one-year, $5 million deal with Hornets
The Hornets find a replacement for Al Jefferson in Roy Hibbert
Roy Hibbert will have another chance to redeem his once glorious career. According to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski, Hibbert has agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets.
With Al Jefferson heading to the Indiana Pacers, Hibbert should be a fine replacement in Charlotte. Hibbert was once considered to be one of the best defensive centers in the league, but with the NBA trending to small-ball lineups, his lack of quickness became frequently exploited. Last season with the Lakers, Hibbert averaged 5.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in 23.2 minutes a game.
Hibbert is not as offensively talented as Jefferson but despite his lack of quickness, he is an upgrade on defense. He likely will be Charlotte's starting center but it wouldn't be surprising if Hibbert still plays around 20 minutes or so a night. Despite a somewhat limited role, Hibbert's career could be revitalized in Charlotte. Steve Clifford is an extremely smart and savvy coach and associate coach Patrick Ewing can likely help motivate Hibbert.
Overall, this is a low risk move by the Hornets. On a one-year deal Hibbert can either thrive in Charlotte or he continue his slow decline and perhaps become even more irrelevant after next season.
