Alex Smith clears concussion protocol, returns to game, then suffers concussion
The Chiefs are down to their second-string quarterback against the Colts
Alex Smith's Sunday did not go well. It started with an ear injury that looked like a concussion and ended a bit later with an actual concussion.
Early in the first quarter, the Chiefs quarterback took a shot to the head from Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson as he tried to drop to the ground to avoid a sack. His head also bounced off the turf. Smith definitely wobbled as his teammates helped him up, which you can watch here. He was taken to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion, according to the Chiefs.

Nick Foles, who signed with the Chiefs in August after the Rams drafted Jared Goff with the first pick in the draft, took over for Smith as he was tested. Smith passed the test and was diagnosed with an ear cut. He returned to the game after Foles threw a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce.

Smith's day ended in the third quarter when -- again -- he slid down to the ground and his head bounced off the turf due to a hit, which you can see here. Foles re-entered the game and Smith was ruled out with a concussion.
He finished 9 of 19 for 127 yards and a touchdown. You can follow along with our GameTracker here as Foles tries to lead the Chiefs past the Colts.
