Former wideout Nate Burleson to join 'The NFL Today' on CBS for 2017 NFL season
Burleson will also appear on 'That Other Pregame Show' on Sunday mornings
The offseason isn't just about additions for NFL teams, it's also about additions for broadcast teams, and CBS Sports has finalized the desk for The NFL Today with the addition of former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson. CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus announced the move Monday morning.
Burleson will contribute to The NFL Today along with James Brown, Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms, as well as working on That Other Pregame Show.
"Nate is a rising star in this business with a dynamic personality and is the perfect complement to our veteran cast," McManus said. "He is knowledgeable, passionate, opinionated and, having recently played, we look forward to his perspective during the discussions and spirited debates with JB, Coach, Boomer and Phil. The addition of Phil and Nate to the show gives us one of the strongest casts for The NFL Today in years."
Burleson, drafted in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, played 11 years in the NFL with the Vikings, Seahawks and Lions. He compiled 5,630 yards, including a 1,006-yard season in his second year. Burleson is the only player in NFL history with three punt returns of 90 yards or more.
The wide receiver would later join NFL Network as part of the crew for Good Morning, Football and will remain in those duties throughout the season as he adds to his plate.
"The NFL Today is one of the few trademark shows in all of professional sports, and I am truly honored to be joining the team," Burleson said. "I'm very excited for the opportunity to work alongside JB, Coach, Boomer and Phil, who are among the best in our business."
We're a little biased because Burleson is now a colleague, but we are also literally watching him on television as we write this: He is very good on camera and will add a lot to the show. He is also, we believe, the first wide receiver on The NFL Today set since James Brown became the host of the show.
