The 27-year-old showed considerable grit in toughing out a troublesome shoulder for the majority of the season and only missing one game after an early December hand surgery to notch his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nomination. McCoy impressively started the season with 4.5 sacks over the season's first five games before enduring a midseason four-game stretch in which he failed to tally a quarterback takedown. The sixth-year pro had a resurgent finish however, tallying his final four sacks over the last six contests. Despite the injury concerns, McCoy amassed the third-highest tackle total and equaled the second-highest sack total of his career.
McCoy now has at least a half-sack in four of the last five weeks, and has equaled last season's total of 8.5 quarterback takedowns. The four stops also equaled the season high he'd set back in Week 4 against the Panthers, his opponent in next Sunday's season finale. Although his tackle numbers (32) are slightly down from the 35 he amassed in 2014 over just 13 games, McCoy has battled through shoulder and hand injuries all year to secure his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nomination.
Gerald McCoy (hand) is active Sunday against the Bears.
After putting in three full practices this week, McCoy will be in the lineup at left defensive tackle. His presence is a big boost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, as he has 7.5 sacks on the season, including at least half a sack in three of his last four contests.
The defensive tackle is only the ninth Buc ever with at least four Pro Bowls, and the seventh to accomplish the honor in four straight seasons. McCoy's four trips to Hawaii have only been surpassed by one other defensive lineman in team history, the legendary Warren Sapp. McCoy has battled through a lingering shoulder injury and an early December hand surgery to tally 28 tackles and 7.5 sacks, with the latter figure being the third-highest of his career in that category.
Gerald McCoy (hand) is active Sunday against the Saints.
McCoy missed Week 13's matchup against Atlanta, but the defensive tackle plans to suit up wearing a cast after logging limited practices all week. He remains a fringe IDP option, however, due both to a questionable workload and generally limited tackle total. Nonetheless, his presence will bolster a run defense that will be squaring off against a New Orleans backfield that will be without Mark Ingram (shoulder).
