Gerald McCoy says he won't hold out
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Buccaneers defensive lineman Gerald McCoy promised he wouldn't hold out of training camp this summer even though he's going into the final year of his contract.

"When they say report to camp, Gerald McCoy will be there regardless of what happens," McCoy said per the Tampa Bay Times. McCoy also told the paper he can't wait to play in the Bucs' new version of the Cover-2 defense

"It's definitely going to be different," McCoy said. "We're playing the old-school, traditional Tampa 2 defense, and all we've been watching is old Chicago tape when (new Bucs coach Lovie Smith) was there. When (the Bucs) were in their prime, from 1996 to 2002, we've been watching all that tape because that's when the Tampa 2 was really thriving and took over the league. I'm excited about it."

Lovie Smith wants extension for Gerald McCoy
by Larry Hartstein |

Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith called extending Gerald McCoy's contract "very important." The defensive tackle, who's entering the final year of his rookie deal, had nine sacks, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery to go with 50 tackles last season.

“In an ideal situation, you do a great job of drafting players and then you reward your players that have come up through the system and done it the right way," Smith said. "The first guy to contact me when I was sitting in my basement down there in Chicago was Gerald McCoy. [He said], ‘I can’t wait to get started.’ I followed him at the University of Oklahoma, his career that he had here, and for our defense, and there’s a reason why.

"He’s a guy that we definitely want around for a while, to say the least.”

Buccaneers' defense could spark turnaround
by Larry Hartstein |

New general manager Jason Licht thinks the Buccaneers' defense could jumpstart a quick turnaround in Tampa Bay.

“We have a lot of core players on this team that I am very excited about — (defensive tackle) Gerald McCoy, (linebacker) Lavonte David, (cornerback) Darrelle Revis and (safety) Dashon Goldson, just to name a few,'' Licht said, per the Tampa Tribune. “I don't think we're far away.''

The Bucs, who finished 4-12, ranked 17th in total yards allowed and 21st in points allowed in 2013. New head coach Lovie Smith is a respected defensive mind who should mold this unit into a force.
