Chiefs wide receiver A.J. Jenkins worked with the first-team offense Saturday, after sitting out the team's first preseason game Thursday with a hamstring injury.

Jenkins got work with the starting offensive with Donnie Avery excused for personal reasons, ESPN.com reports. Jenkins is fighting for a spot in the receiver rotation, and was listed as the backup at the second receiver spot on the team's first official depth chart.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said receiver A.J. Jenkins made "big strides" late last season. Acquired in a trade with the 49ers, Jenkings caught three passes for 67 yards in his first start, the regular-season finale at San Diego, and had a 27-yard reverse in the playoff loss to the Colts.

“I think you saw what he can do there,” Reid told the Kansas City Star. "You saw it again in the playoff game. He’s a capable player. I thought he made big strides last year."

The Chiefs are "very excited" about the potential of third-year wideout A.J. Jenkins, reports ESPN. Jenkins was acquired in an August trade with the 49ers and finished the season with eight catches for 130 yards.

Jenkins was San Francisco's first-round pick in 2012.

Chiefs receiver A.J. Jenkins got a chance to shine with wideout Dwayne Bowe (concussion) and other starters sitting out Week 17. Jenkins caught three passes while posting team highs in targets (7) and receiving yards (67).

Jenkins finishes the regular season with eight catches for 130 yards and no touchdowns.

Chiefs receivers held in check Week 13

Chiefs backup receivers Dexter McCluster, Junior Hemingway, Donnie Avery and A.J. Jenkins produced decent games Week 13.

Hemingway was the most successful of the bunch, catching three passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. McCluster caught five balls for 43 yards. He also carried the ball once, but did not pick up any yards. Jenkins caught three passes for 35 yards, but had a killer drop on a long play in the third quarter. They'll take on Washington Week 14. Avery caught two passes for 16 yards.
