Cox was in line to serve as a depth option along Carolina's defensive line, but a back injury kept him sidelined. However, his loss likely won't have much a negative impact on the team, considering the amount of talent hoarded within the Panthers' defensive front.
Cox (back) was released by the Panthers on Tuesday, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.
Cox was a candidate to provide depth on the defensive line in Carolina, but a back injury ultimately hurt his chances at making the team. Charles Johnson and Kony Ealy figure to be the starters at defensive end moving forward.
Cox is battling for reserve reps at defensive end, so the injury doesn't help his case on moving up the depth chart. It's unclear exactly when the injury occurred, but he remains without a concrete timetable for a return and could be in danger of missing Saturday's preseason matchup with the Titans.
