Cowboys' Tony Romo: Progressing with rehab
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Head coach Jason Garrett relayed Thursday that Romo (back) is progressing in his rehab effort, which includes improved mobility, Rob Phillips of the Cowboys' official site reports.

Four weeks removed from the devastating preseason hit, Romo appears to be on the right path, as the Cowboys' strength and conditioning staff currently has the quarterback on a light regimen, according to David Helman of the team's official site. In his absence, rookie Dak Prescott has directed the team to a 1-1 record on the backs of 63 percent passing and 519 yards, yet his lack of an interception, while impressive, has been offset with no touchdown tosses to date. No matter the Cowboys' place in the standings at the point Romo is cleared for game action, Prescott will yield the top quarterback spot to the 13-year veteran.

Cowboys' Tony Romo: Had X-rays recently
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Romo had X-rays to check the progress of his L1 vertebrae fracture last week, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Romo's X-rays were simply done to see how his recovery was going and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said everything was on track afterward. Although Jones was unsure when Romo would take the next step in his rehab, Romo's initial 6-to-10 week timetable still appears to be in effect. While Romo continues to nurse his injured back, rookie Dak Prescott figures to remain at the helm of Dallas' offense.

Cowboys' Tony Romo: Figures to stay on active roster
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones strongly suggested that Romo (back) will be kept on the 53-man roster to start the season, David Helman of Dallas Cowboys.com reports.

There's been talk about placing Romo on injured reserve, which would prevent the veteran quarterback from practicing before Week 7 or playing in a game before Week 9. While it is quite possible Romo won't be back prior to Week 9, his recovery timetable (8-10 weeks) suggests it's at least possible. The Cowboys may still want Romo to undergo some tests before a decision is finalized, but it sounds as if the team has essentially made up its mind.

Cowboys' Tony Romo: Scheduled for more testing prior to IR decision
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Romo (back) will undergo testing over the next few days as the Cowboys try to determine whether he'll start the season on injured reserve, ESPN's Todd Archer reports.

It was reported Sunday that Romo will stay on the 53-man roster, but that's apparently no longer a sure thing. If he's in fact placed on injured reserve, the 36-year-old quarterback wouldn't be eligible to practice until Week 7 or play in a game until Week 9. Given his timetable of 8-to-10 weeks, there's seemingly some chance Romo could return before Week 9, which probably makes it worthwhile to keep him on the roster. With the Cowboys on bye in Week 7, a return for Week 8 against Philadelphia makes for a reasonable target. In the meantime, Dak Prescott will enter Week 1 as the starting quarterback, with Mark Sanchez serving as his backup and Jameill Showers on the practice squad.

Cowboys' Tony Romo: Won't be placed on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Romo (back) will stay on the active roster to start the season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

There was some thought Romo might be placed on injured reserve, as the new rules allow each team to bring one player back from IR anytime after the first six weeks of its season. While his 8-10 week timetable suggests Romo is unlikely to return before that point, the Cowboys apparently haven't given up hope he could be back before Week 8. The team has a Week 7 bye, making Week 8 (against the Eagles) a more realistic target for Romo's return. While not slated for surgery, Romo reportedly won't be cleared to play until his fracture heals completely.
