Video: USA's Alex Goligoski visciously boarded at World Championships

By Brian Stubits | Hockey writer

The United States turned in one of the best performances we've seen from an American squad at the World Championships on Sunday, just manhandling host nation Finland from start to finish.

Just moments after the USA took a 5-0 lead -- remember, Finland is the defending world champ -- the frustration from being completely dominated appeared to boil over for the Finns. The evidence? Ansi Salmela's absolutely vicious boarding of Team USA and Dallas Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski.

Here's the hit that gave Salmela a five-minute major, game misconduct and surely a suspension from the IIHF.

I audibly cringed at each replay the first five or six times. That was just such an agressive, dangerous and all-around awful hit from Salmela. Thankfully, Goligoski was OK and was able to continue. But it can't have been far off from being really, really bad for him.

If this were the NHL, what kind of suspension would Brendan Shanahan have lined up? I'm sure it would be hefty. Then again, the fact that Goligoski wasn't injured ... (OK, wrong spot to complain).
