  • Panthers' Reto Berra: Back in minor league

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/26/17) Berra has been reassigned to AHL Springfield, Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel reports.

Berra never got the chance to start, as Roberto Luongo got the nod for both games of James Reimer's absence. Now that Reimer is back with the team, Berra heads down to the minors and is unlikely to get a call back up to the big club unless one of the aforementioned goalies goes down with an injury.

Panthers' Reto Berra: Promoted to big club

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/19/17) The Panthers recalled Berra from AHL Springfield on Thursday.

James Reimer will be away from the team for Florida's next two games while attending to a personal matter, so Berra will serve as Roberto Luongo's backup during that span. The 30-year-old netminder will likely be sent back to the minors as soon as Reimer is ready to return.

Panthers' Reto Berra: Placed on waivers Wednesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/5/16) Berra was waived by the Panthers on Wednesday, Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel reports.

New Panthers general manager Tom Rowe traded for Berra a day before the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in June. At the time, it was unclear if Roberto Luongo would be available for the start of the season due to his recovering from hip surgery, but the veteran has since been cleared with Berra deemed expendable. If Berra goes unclaimed in the 24-hour waiver window, he may find himself with a ticket to AHL Portland.

Panthers' Reto Berra: Shipped to Florida

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/23/16) The Avalanche traded Berra to the Panthers on Thursday in exchange for forward Rocco Grimaldi.

Roberto Luongo was strong in goal last season and Al Montoya was a fine complementary option, though the latter is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, opening the door for Berra, who is signed through the 2016-17 campaign. A fourth-round draft choice in 2006, Berra fell out of favor in Colorado, with head coach Patrick Roy seemingly putting his trust in Calvin Pickard for backup duty rather than the 29-year-old Berra. In 64 games over the span of three years, Berra has a 19-30-4 record, 2.82 GAA and .906 save percentage -- that includes 29 contests as a member of the Flames in 2013-14. If Montoya hits the open market, Berra should have no problems claiming the No. 2 position on the Panthers depth chart.

After clearing waivers, Berra will work at the AHL level for now, while Calvin Pickard is in line to work as Semyon Varlamov's backup with the big club.
