|(6/23/16) The Avalanche traded Berra to the Panthers on Thursday in exchange for forward Rocco Grimaldi.|
Roberto Luongo was strong in goal last season and Al Montoya was a fine complementary option, though the latter is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, opening the door for Berra, who is signed through the 2016-17 campaign. A fourth-round draft choice in 2006, Berra fell out of favor in Colorado, with head coach Patrick Roy seemingly putting his trust in Calvin Pickard for backup duty rather than the 29-year-old Berra. In 64 games over the span of three years, Berra has a 19-30-4 record, 2.82 GAA and .906 save percentage -- that includes 29 contests as a member of the Flames in 2013-14. If Montoya hits the open market, Berra should have no problems claiming the No. 2 position on the Panthers depth chart.
