Real Madrid's top objective this season is to win a trophy after failing to do so last year, and the capital club lost a prime chance at lifting one of the three possible trophies this season after Royal Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) competition committee judge, Francisco Rubio Sanchez, came down hard on the Madristas.

Real Madrid was disqualified from the 2015-16 Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player in Wednesday's cup clash against Cadiz, per RFEF on Friday.

Russian winger Denis Cheryshev started the 3-1 win over Cadiz and scored just a few minutes into the match. He was suspended for the match after receiving three yellow cards in the competition last season while playing for Villarreal.

Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez had no clue that he couldn't be used.

"Clearly, the club did not know anything, the federation had not said anything, nor Villarreal, so we thought we could field him."

"After finding out at half time, we substituted [Cheryshev] immediately to show good faith."

It's quite stunning and embarrassing to see Real Madrid eliminated and also that the team was not aware of the situation. The club released a statement on Friday saying it would take measures to fight for a favorable outcome for the club, citing that the player was never informed of the suspension.
