Real Madrid falls at Valencia, blows chance to cushion La Liga lead over Barcelona
It was a night to forget for Real at Mestalla
Real Madrid traveled to Valencia on Wednesday for a La Liga showdown that was rescheduled from December when Real was playing at the Club World Cup.
Entering the day with a one-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table and with two less matches played, this was one of the two upcoming chances Real had to separate themselves from the Catalan club and really cement themselves as favorites to win the league.
But at a loud, rowdy Mestalla, Real couldnât get it done.
Goals from Simone Zaza and Fabian Orellana carried Valencia to a 2-1 win, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the sole Real Madrid goal.
Los Blancos dominated possession and looked sure to score in the final half hour by pushing high and sending in cross after cross, but Valenciaâs defense held on for a much-needed result, with Ezequiel Garay starring.
Valencia actually led 2-0 after just nine minutes, and the first goal you have just got to see. It came off the left foot of Zaza, and it was sensational.

Now, Real Madrid still has to make up a match against Celta Vigo, where it can still pad its lead atop of La Liga. But there is no doubt it blew a chance to do major damage to Barcelonaâs title chances on Wednesday.
