What to Know
The North Carolina Tar Heels are 6-2 against the Virginia Tech Hokies since January of 2016, and they'll have a chance to extend that success Saturday. UNC and Virginia Tech will face off in an ACC battle at 4 p.m. ET at Cassell Coliseum. Coming off of a loss in a game they were expected to win, the Tar Heels nows face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.
UNC came up short against the Pittsburgh Panthers on Wednesday, falling 76-67. If the result catches you off guard, it should: UNC was far and away the favorite. They got double-digit scores from four players: guard Caleb Love (19), forward Brady Manek (12), guard Kerwin Walton (11), and guard Leaky Black (11).
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech was able to grind out a solid win over the Virginia Cavaliers on Monday, winning 62-53. It was another big night for the Hokies' forward Keve Aluma, who had 24 points in addition to eight rebounds and four blocks.
The Tar Heels are now 18-8 while Virginia Tech sits at 16-10. A pair of numbers to keep in mind before tip-off: UNC is second worst in college basketball in takeaways, with only 10.1 on average. To make matters even worse for UNC, Virginia Tech enters the game with only 10.8 turnovers per game on average, good for 34th best in college basketball. So the cards are definitely stacked in Virginia Tech's favor.
