Preview
The SMU Mustangs and the Boston College Eagles will square off in the Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park 11:00 a.m. ET on Thursday. Boston College is crawling into this game hobbled by three consecutive losses dating back to last season, while SMU will bounce in with nine consecutive wins dating back to last season.
SMU gave up the first points on December 2nd, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 26-14 victory over Tulane.
SMU can attribute much of their success to Jaylan Knighton, who rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown. Collin Rogers did his part by putting the 'special' in special teams, booting in four field goals and two extra points.
Another reason for the win was SMU's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. Isaiah Smith was especially locked on to Tulane's QB and sacked him 2.5 times.
Meanwhile, it looks like Boston College got the smaller half of the wishbone at Thanksgiving dinner. They found themselves the reluctant recipients of a 45-20 punch to the gut against Miami (FL) back in November. Boston College was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 28-7.
Boston College's loss came about despite a quality game from Thomas Castellanos, who rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 151 yards and a touchdown.
SMU pushed their record up to 11-2 with that win, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Boston College, their loss dropped their record down to 6-6.
Going forward, SMU shouldn't be too worried about this matchup, as the experts have them favored by ten points. For those looking to play the spread, watch out: SMU is playing as the underdog, but their 2-6 record against the spread as such isn't exactly encouraging.
Thursday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. The Mustangs have been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 181.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like the Eagles struggle in that department as they've been averaging 193 rushing yards per game. It's looking like Thursday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
