NASCAR at Kansas results: Denny Hamlin captures his fifth checkered flag of the 2020 season in win
Everything going on at Kansas Speedway
Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag on Thursday's Super Start Batteries 400 presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts at Kansas Speedway in the Cup Series. With 12 laps to go, Hamlin overtook Kevin Harvick for the lead and just never let go.
The win at Kansas for Hamlin gives him sole possession of the lead for most Cup Series wins on the season with five. He breaks the tie he had with Harvick -- who started Thursday's race in the pole position.
As the race entered the second stage, the competition pretty much became a war of attrition. On a more individual level, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was out of the race early because of a fire that broke out in the cockpit, and Matt Kenseth and Bubba Wallace wrecked on the front stretch. But there were also two notable wrecks that took out a good chunk of drivers.
First was the one that involved Matt DiBenedetto, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson.
Then there was the one that caused a big hit for Ryan Preece. He was luckily able to walk away from the crash, but the impact was pretty scary.
The race went on for 400 miles over the course of 267 laps under the lights at Kansas Speedway with no spectators in the stands because of coronavirus restrictions. This Thursday night race at Kansas took the place of a race over the weekend, and the Cup Series is back at it Aug. 2 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301.
