Buccaneers' Doug Martin involved in car crash, suffers minor injuries
According to Tampa police, the running back is OK
Buccaneers running back Doug Martin was involved in a car crash on Thursday, but according to police, he is OK. He suffered only minor injuries.
On May 4, 2017 at approximately 1:15 p.m. Doug Martin was traveling eastbound on Azeele Street. The driver of a black Kia traveling southbound on Habana ran the stop sign and collided with Martin's black BMW in the middle of the intersection. Martin's vehicle was displaced from the roadway and hit an air conditioning unit outside of a local business. Martin received minor cuts and bruises as a result of the crash. Tampa Police officers responded to the scene and cited the driver of the Kia, Jake Balsay, for committing a stop sign violation.
Here's Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht's statement:
Doug was the unfortunate victim in an auto accident earlier today after leaving our team facility. While Doug's vehicle sustained a large amount of damage, we are pleased to report that he received only minor cuts and bruises. He has been evaluated by our medical staff and has headed home.
Martin confirmed that he's OK, though his car isn't.

That's obviously a huge relief.
Martin, 28, is entering his sixth NFL season, all of which he's spent in Tampa Bay. In that span, he's rushed for 4,227 yards and 23 touchdowns. Though Martin experienced the worst season of his career in 2016 -- he averaged 2.9 yards per carry in eight games -- and is facing a three-game ban for violating the league's performance-enhancing drugs policy, he'll likely have a chance to earn back his spot as the team's primary ball-carrier.
The Buccaneers drafted Jeremy McNichols in the fifth round, and Jacquizz Rodgers and Charles Sims will return to the team, but if Martin is healthy, he'll likely be the most talented player in the backfield.
