  • Rangers' Mackenzie Skapski: Returns to AHL training camp

Skapski was cut from the Rangers' training camp roster and sent to AHL Hartford, the New York Post reports.

This was always going to happen, as Skapski is at best the Rangers' fourth-string goalie. Still just 22, he's coming off a rough year split between the AHL and ECHL; the B.C. native will need to show improvement in the minors this year to secure an NHL future.

Skapski was re-assigned to Hartford of the AHL on Wednesday, reports Andrew Gross of The Record.Although the the former sixth round (2013) pick performed well in two starts with his NHL employer last season, he is still re-habbing from hip surgery and never had a chance to give Magnus Hellberg and/or Antti Raanta a run for Henrik Lundqvist's back-up gig. While not considered to be highly touted, once he returns to action, he's certainly on a short list of goaltenders that could get a call up to Broadway should the organization run into an injury or three.
