What to know about each team:
Purdue
The Boilermakers had one of the more difficult draws of the first round on the 4 line, facing No. 13 Vermont -- a 29-win team and America East Conference tourney winner. Purdue battled back-and-forth all night with the Catamounts but Caleb Swanigan’s 16 point 14 point rebound night led them to an 80-70 win. Purdue didn’t struggle in any one area, and overall looked really solid in the first round. If Swanigan and Haas continue their strong play down low, Purdue is going to cause some damage and threaten for more than just a Sweet 16 appearance. But they have a major road block standing in the way in the form of No. 5 seed Iowa State. The Cyclones have won 10 of their last 11 games including a first round win over Nevada.
Iowa State
Nevada didn’t have enough for the Cyclones, who have won 10 of their last 11 and are looking like they can take on the size of Purdue with aplomb. Monte Morris is the best overall point guard in this tournament. And did you see Deonte Burton doing his thing again? The guy is the best big-man dunker in college hoops. Steve Prohm’s team will likely try to get Purdue running and make the Boilers go small.
