Austin Peay men's basketball coach Dave Loos recently underwent surgery to successfully remove a malignant tumor, the school announced late Monday afternoon.

"Our thoughts and concerns right now are for the health and well-being of Coach Loos," said Austin Peay athletic director Ryan Ivey. "We look forward to welcoming him back when he has made a full recovery.

According to Austin Peay officials, a medical exam led to the discovery of a malignant tumor on Loos' colon that was removed at St. Thomas Medical Center in Nashville -- but only after it had spread to one of the 23 lymph nodes in the area. Consequently, Loos, 69, will require chemotherapy treatments. But the school is still optimistic that Loos will be able to coach the Governors for a 27th consecutive season.

Assistant Jay Bowen will handle the day-to-day duties in Loos' absence.

"I am confident in the ability of our assistant coaches, led by Jay Bowen, to continue the growth of our men's basketball program while we await Coach Loos' return," Ivey said.
