Oklahoma State hires assistant Mike Boynton Jr. to be its next coach
Boynton is a surprise hire, a former assistant under Brad Underwood, who left for Illinois
Oklahoma State hired assistant Mike Boynton Jr. as its next men’s basketball coach, sources told CBS Sports on Friday.
Boynton previously served as an assistant under Brad Underwood at Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State. Underwood took the Illinois job on Saturday. Boynton starred in college at South Carolina from 2001-04. This is his first head-coaching job.
On Thursday, Oklahoma State interviewed every sitting assistant, in addition to onetime Cowboys guard and CBS Sports radio personality Doug Gottlieb, for the position. A source told CBS Sports that Boynton’s vision for the program, and his ability to keep it stable amid the unexpected loss of Underwood, earned him the gig.
Oklahoma State (20-13) made the NCAA Tournament, losing in the first round as a 10 seed to Michigan. Boynton will be the third coach in three years; Oklahoma State fired Travis Ford in 2016, then lost Underwood to Illinois.
