Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim confirms former Orange star Fab Melo dead at 26
Melo played two seasons for the Orange before entering the 2012 NBA Draft
Former Syracuse standout Fab Melo died Saturday in Brazil, Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim confirmed via Twitter.
Melo was 26 years old.
"I'm very sorry to hear about the passing of Fab Melo," Boeheim tweeted. "He was a kind, genuine person who was committed to doing his best while he was at Syracuse. Our staff and his teammates were fortunate to have had the opportunity to know Fab. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
The details surrounding Melo's death remain unclear.
Melo was a McDonald's All-American in 2010. He eventually enrolled at Syracuse, where he played two seasons before being ruled ineligible for the 2012 NCAA Tournament and entering the 2012 NBA Draft.
The 7-foot center was selected 22nd overall by the Boston Celtics.
He appeared in six games for that franchise.
