Twenty-eight players -- including three Kentucky Wildcats, among them Hamidou Diallo -- have been invited to try out for the USA Men's U19 World Championship team that will be coached by John Calipari and is scheduled to compete in the FIBA World Cup next month in Egypt, a source told CBS Sports on Thursday.

A formal announcement is expected soon.

The invited players are:

  • Desmond Bane (TCU)
  • Bol Bol (Class of 2018)
  • Marques Bolden (Duke)
  • Chaundee Brown (Wake Forest)
  • Devon Daniels (NC State)
  • Hamidou Diallo (Kentucky)
  • Carsen Edwards (Purdue)
  • Malachi Flynn (Washington State)
  • Kevin Huerter (Maryland)
  • Louis King (Class of 2018)
  • Kevin Knox (Kentucky)
  • Romeo Langford (Class of 2018)
  • Brandon McCoy (UNLV)
  • De'Anthony Melton (USC)

  • P.J. Washington (Kentucky)
  • Austin Wiley (Auburn)
  • Kris Wilkes (UCLA)
  • Trae Young (Oklahoma)

Whether every player who ultimately makes the team will actually travel to Egypt for the event remains unclear because of terrorism concerns in the region. In fact, the fathers of two Kentucky players, Kevin Knox and P.J. Washington, recently acknowledged to SECCountry.com that they are at least hesitant about sending their sons to Cairo.

"It's up in the air -- just with the whole security concern," said P.J. Washington's father, Paul Washington. "Do you have any kids? Would you allow them to go to Egypt right now?"

Added Kevin Knox Sr.: "We're still basically trying to work out all the logistics of what's going on overseas, waiting to hear back from Cal and USA Basketball as far as some of the security measures they're going to take to protect the kids."

A source told CBS Sports that USA Basketball is indeed taking extra security measures -- perhaps unlike anything the organization has ever done below the senior team level. The FIBA World Cup is scheduled for July 1-9.
