Syracuse was left out of the field of 68 teams when the selection committee revealed the NCAA Tournament bracket on Sunday. The Orange finished the season 18-14 with six top-50 wins, but its 2-11 record away from home and its overall body of work left the Cuse on the wrong side of the bubble.

Coach Jim Boeheim discussed what he felt was a snub from the field on ESPN after the seed reveal.

“Only thing [the committee] talked about was our bad losses,” he said. “We went out and played teams. I don’t know if everyone did that.”

Boeheim also noted Wake Forest, which clinched an at-large bid and a No. 11 seed, finished below Syracuse in the league standings. The Orange also beat Wake Forest in a head-to-head matchup this season.

“Nobody on the bubble had three top-10 wins,” Boeheim added.

“Last year we had the same losses and the committee chose to go with the team that had the wins. It’s difficult to understand the change from one year to the next.”

Ultimately for Syracuse, a lack of success on the road and a mostly mediocre season was enough to do it. The Orange had a nice stretch in mid-January and early February, but losses in five of the last seven were momentum killers. Syracuse will head to the NIT where it will play UNC-Greensboro as a No. 1 seed.

“We weren’t a good team this year,” Boeheim said. “I know that, I admit that.”
