Watch: Wild tip-in saves Notre Dame from losing to Stephen F. Austin
Notre Dame avoids the upset in one of the best games of the NCAA Tournament so far.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Well, that was the best game of the NCAA Tournament so far.
No. 6 Notre Dame got a tip-in with 1.5 seconds to go to barely -- and I mean barely -- get past No. 14 Stephen F. Austin and win 76-75 and to advance to the Sweet 16 in the East Region. Demetrius Jackson put up a tough shot, which was rebounded by Zach Auguste, whose put-back fell wrong but was tipped in by ... who?
Oh, right, Rex Pflueger, of course.
The basket was Pflueger's only one of the game.
The madness of this month.
Stephen F. Austin lost for the first time in 2016. Its 23-game winning streak painfully coming to an end. SFA might have been the most under-seeded mid-major team in tournament history, and on Sunday, it proved why. The Lumberjacks would have been the third 14 seed in tournament history to break through to the second weekend, joining Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1997 and Cleveland State in 1986.
Notre Dame moves on to play in the East regional semifinals on Friday in Philadelphia against the winner of Xavier and Wisconsin.
