You won't believe the drubbing Maryland women's hoops put on poor Bluefield St.
Bluefield State was shut out in the second half
What will likely wind up as the most lopsided, dominant win of the 2016-17 college basketball season transpired in College Park, Md., on Wednesday night.
As dozens of millions of people around the country watched the early innings of what would become one of the greatest games in baseball history -- the Chicago Cubs winning game seven of the World Series -- the University of Maryland's women's basketball team defeated D-II Bluefield State by an outrageous score.
146-17. A 129-point spread.
Bluefield State did not score in the second half. It was an exhibition game, so the score doesn't count in the record books. If it did, it would've beaten the point-differential record in women's hoops (Grambling State beat Jarvis Christian by 102 points in 1986.)
Maryland induced a soul-crushing 51 Bluefield State turnovers. Blair Watson led the Terrapins with 29 points.
The Diamondback, Maryland's student newspaper, described a scene in which Maryland fans began rooting for Bluefield State to even make one field goal in the second half. But none fell.
Maryland finished the game on an unfathomable 78-0 run. Tiny irony: Bluefield State did at one point hold the lead. It was 3-2.
The Terrapins are ranked sixth in the AP's preseason top 25 poll and have Final Four aspirations. Maryland made the women's Final Four in 2014 and 2015. This was a mismatch of the highest degree.
