College football Week 9 lines, game odds: Florida State a home dog to Clemson
An early look at the lines and odds for Week 9 of the college football season
After Ohio State fell to Penn State in a stunning upset on Saturday night, there are only seven Power Five conference teams that remain undefeated.
Alabama has a bye week, but the other six undefeated teams are in action in Week 9. West Virginia, Baylor and Nebraska are all still looking to prove they belong at the top of the rankings while Clemson, Washington and Michigan want to maintain their spots in the top four.
Those six teams all make it into this week's look at early lines, headlined by a primetime ACC Atlantic battle between Clemson and Florida State.
Lines you need to know
No. 3 Clemson (-4.5) at No. 12 Florida State: The Seminoles have rebounded from their most recent loss to North Carolina with back-to-back wins over Miami and Wake Forest. The defense looks like it's improved, but the Miami win looks worse after the Hurricanes recent slide and we need to see that same kind of defensive performance against a quality opponent. Clemson will be the final chance for the Seminoles to salvage the season and prove it belongs as a contender in the ACC.
No. 4 Washington (-10) at No. 17 Utah: The Huskies have been beating down every opponent in their path recently. Utah escaped with a win over UCLA last week, but with the way the Bruins were able to put up 45 points on them, it doesn't bode well for the Utes against Jake Browning and the Washington offense. That unit must be much better to keep this inside double digits for the cover.
Northwestern (+24.5) at No. 6 Ohio State: The Buckeyes need to rebound from the loss at Penn State and in comes a Northwestern team that's looked much improved the past few weeks. This line seems pretty wide considering the Wildcats' recent play, but this also could be a spot where an angry Ohio State team tries to take out some frustration on the 'Cats.
These may raise eyebrows
No. 8 Nebraska (+9) at No. 11 Wisconsin: Can the Huskers get a little respect? Not from the oddsmakers. The Huskers are near double digit dogs against the Badgers in Madison this weekend. That's not terribly surprising considering the struggles they had with Purdue last week, but that's a lot of points to expect Wisconsin's offense to cover.
No. 15 Auburn (-3) at Ole Miss: Auburn just put more than 500 rushing yards on Arkansas and now gets to face an Ole Miss defense that let Leonard Fournette rush for 284 yards a week ago. I'm not sure how much gas the Rebels have left in the tank and Auburn has looked like a really good team in recent weeks. This line feels a bit low for the Tigers, even on the road.
No. 10 West Virginia (-4) at Oklahoma State: Like Auburn, West Virginia is laying well inside a touchdown on the road this week despite showing out once again against TCU a week ago. It's time to take the Mountaineers seriously and with the way they've been playing defense, I think this line is a bit low against the Pokes.
Consider staying away
Miami (-2) at Notre Dame: Don't wager on this game. Honestly, don't watch this game. Just walk away from all the sadness in South Bend this week. It can only ruin your Saturday.
No. 2 Michigan (-21.5) at Michigan State: Sparty is bad, but Dantonio lives for the Michigan game. The Wolverines could win this by 35, but I just wouldn't feel comfortable laying more than three touchdowns against Dantonio in this spot. It's a stay away game for me.
Stanford (-5.5) at Arizona: Stanford is a miserable football team. The Cardinal are almost unwatchable, and they are certainly on my "never wager on when a favorite" list. As a home dog, Arizona would be my lean but I don't trust them in this spot so it's another one to avoid.
